Cleyera Japonica (Sakaki) is an evergreen tree that has green leaves even in winter and is a plant that is used in Shinto rituals such as offering it to the altar in Japan.
The reason why the evergreen tree is used for the Shinto ritual because it is considered to be the proof of God's endless blessings. At Ise Shrine, many Sakaki trees are also used at the torii gate and the fence of the palace as a sign of the sacred place.
